Of all of my books, The Reinvention of Mimi Finnegan really seems to have won readers hearts. It won a silver medal at the 2016 Reader’s Favorite Awards, honorable mention at the London Book Festival and was a finalist in the RONE Awards. For this reason, I decided to go forth and audition actresses to read the audio book. WOW! I had no idea what I was getting into, none.
Because Mimi is a real person to me, and actively lives in my head, I know what she sounds like. I know when she’s being sarcastic and snarky and when she’s vulnerable or just plain pathetic. I know Mimi like none other.
So when the auditions started to pour in, I listened to the first few with great enthusiasm and excitement. I was sorely disappointed. The actresses didn’t seem to get the memo that this was a romantic comedy, heavy on the comedy. They sounded bored, bitchy, nasally or really freaking old. I’m not kidding here, lots of grannies auditioned when I specifically requested the voice of a woman in her early thirties.
I started to get despondent. I would have loved to have read Mimi for you myself, but there just aren’t enough hours in the day for me to raise my family, write the new books I’m working on, stay on top of the laundry AND be Mimi. For some reason, Christina Hendricks and Bryce Howard weren’t returning my calls so I was on my own. (Although, wouldn’t you LOVE to see either Christina or Bryce portray Mimi on the big screen?)
Finally on week 3 of disappointing auditions, right on the cusp of giving up, I received a soundbite from an actress named Betty Soo. Believe me when I say, I was not particularly excited. I sat down at the computer, scanned Facebook, shopped for wool socks and tried to get myself booked on the Ellen Show before finally hitting play. Shazam! Within five seconds, I knew I found Mimi!
So if you loved Mimi or have yet to discover her, I can’t recommend Betty’s performance highly enough! What a spectacular way to get you through rush hour, tanning on a tropical beach or folding laundry. It was such fun for me to listen to my book on audio that I laughed out loud, shed a tear or two and occasionally forgot I wrote this masterpiece.

I hope you love the book as much as I loved writing it. I’d be most appreciative for any reviews you leave on Amazon.
Happy New Year, All!!
